Oriental scales & improvisation with Nenos Yousef and Feras Charestan

In this workshop you will learn about oriental music and improvisation. Nenos Yousef and Feras Charestan talk about their instruments oud and qanun, about the scales (hujaz) maqam and maqa (Bayat) maqam (with quarter tones) and how to play and improvise on these scales.

All instruments are welcome. If your instrument cannot play quarter tones, you will still be able to play the first scale.

The workshop will take place in the program Zoom. You will receive a link sent by email shortly before the workshop.

Nenos Yousef is a musician and oud player from Iraq, as well as a business developer for oriental music in the adult education organization, Bilda. He has studied music at the music Mosul Conservatory in Iraq and later at Sommenbygdens Folkhögskola (municipal adult education) in Tranås, Sweden. He is a very experienced musician and leads the band, Le Trio Baghdad.

Feras Charestan is from the city of Al-Hasakeh in northeastern Syria and studied qānun at the High Institute of Music in Damascus. He has performed as a qānun soloist with symphony orchestras and has been a member of popular bands as well as contemporary music ensembles that create new music with roots in Middle Eastern traditions. He is also a business developer at Bilda for oriental music.

The workshop is arranged in collaboration with the adult education organization, Bilda. Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, February 14th via Bilda's website.
